Chilblains: What are they and how are they treated?
Chilblains are inflammations of the skin, which are usually created on toes , face and fingers, from exposure to low temperatures followed by abrupt exposure to higher temperatures. They appear as redness on the skin and are more often accompanied by itching or burning sensation, and less often by painful local swelling.
How do Chilblains appear?
In cold conditions, the contraction of the cutaneous small vessels forms a lower blood flow to the capillaries. Thus, with an abrupt rise in temperature, their expansion allows larger amounts of blood, which they cannot control properly. As a consequence, they channel it into the surrounding tissue, creating the symptom known as chilblains. The first visible symptoms usually appear within 12 to 24 hours since exposure, while the faster we act and provide care, the faster their treatment.
